The cost of mishandled baggage

According to the SITA 2018 Baggage Report, the overall cost of mishandled bags to the industry was US$2.3 billion in 2017. Nevertheless, this is a sizable reduction on the US$4.22 billion mishandling cost racked up in 2007. The BRM is doing its part to continue the vast improvement since then.

Improving baggage operations

The BRM is designed to provide insight into the key features of baggage operations.

Some of the key updates include:

• IATA Resolution 753 - Further explanation on the core tracking points, including primary and secondary data elements, and its relation with the resolution requirements. Specific information on when and how a tracking point can be recorded.

IATA Baggage Services

IATA’s Baggage Services brings value to the air transport industry through several mechanisms. These support our members and encourage collaboration between airlines when transporting baggage. Our main project focus is InBag - Innovation in Baggage.

Work Groups

• Baggage Working Group (BWG) & Baggage Steering Group were established to review and develop baggage related recommendations into a form that can be adopted by the ASC and then the PSC as resolutions or recommended practices.
• Airport Services Committee (ASC) develops and maintains standards and procedures for the handling of passengers and baggage at airports, including all forms and regulations.
• Passenger Services Conference (PSC) agrees standards and procedures for passenger and baggage handling, passenger reservations and passenger ticketing matters among others.
• Upcoming Work Group meetings 

Baggage XML Initiative

The Baggage XML project is working towards a sustainable standard for messaging in the area of baggage.
